DAPP in Zambia received a donation of 570 books from United Bank for Africa Zambia. The donation of books is meant to encourage students to read widely at an early age and instill in them a love for reading as they grow into adulthood. These books will help enrich the libraries of our DAPP Mkushi College of Education, basic schools were the College students are undertaking their teaching practice, DAPP Children's Town and other districts were DAPP is working with community schools.
Speaking during his speech at the donation ceremony, the UBA Chairperson Dr. Chabwera, stated that Education is a priority area and an umbrella arm of UBAs Corporate Social Responsibility. He further mentioned that, “our children no longer read; their passion for reading informative and educative books is fast eroding and this is part of the ills we want to correct in the continent’s educational sector”. Ms Elise Soerensen the DAPP Zambia Managing Director, received the books with gratitude and mentioned that the books will be put to good use by the beneficiary schools and pupils.
There is need to rekindle the dwindling reading culture amongst African youths. The distribution of the donated books to the community schools and presentation of books to the girls will stimulate the quest for increased literacy. Pupils from Olympia High School and Fradon School who were present at the donation ceremony received a book each.
